These types of collars are good dog training aids because the Martingale collar is a type of choke collar but with limits. It is made to slip over the dog's head and lie flat on the back of his neck; when a leash is attached to the collar it will tighten around the throat.
It may seem cruel, but once it is adjusted correctly the collar will not continue to tighten around the dog's neck; it will only tighten enough to prevent the dog from slipping out of the collar.
These types of collars prove to be good dog training aids while you are out on a walk if your dog has a tendency to get excited and try to wiggle its way out of the collar. It will teach your dog that it can not do this and soon you will find that you dog has learned this valuable lesson.
